Green cover to Delhi: 100 reservoirs, 70 lakh saplings and e-buses – Read
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said the government will take the legal route to protect the biodiversity, soil and water of Delhi’s ‘Central Ridge’. After inaugurating a mega plantation drive here, Shah said trees like jamun, mango, arjun and neem, which live for more than 100 years, would be planted in the ridge area. Under this mega tree plantation campaign, a target has been set to plant 70 lakh saplings in the city.
Ridge area will get green cover
He said that in the next four years, the Delhi government will convert 6,300 hectares of the ridge area into green cover by planting one crore saplings of local tree species, 23 lakh saplings of big tree species and 65 lakh shrubs and medicinal plants.
Aim to make Delhi pollution free and green
Shah also mentioned a ‘grand master plan’ to convert the ridge into a ‘green ridge’. Under this master plan, 100 reservoirs, restaurants and small gardens like ‘Nakshatra Van’, ‘Tirthankar Van’ and ‘Vaman Van’ will be developed in the ridge to achieve the goal of making Delhi pollution free and green. He stressed that legal protections would be used to ensure the conservation of the ridge’s biodiversity, soils and water.
E-buses and infrastructure
Union Home Minister flagged off 300 e-buses. He also digitally laid the foundation stone of a high security jail at Narela, inaugurated three bus depots and an automated vehicle testing station at Nand Nagari.
Yamuna cleaning and waste management
He announced that an agreement will be signed with the National Dairy Development Board next week to ensure that not even a kilogram of cow dung from Delhi dairies flows into the Yamuna river. Shah also underlined that 129 sewage treatment plants are currently operational and 29 more are in the pipeline to clean the Yamuna.
