GST Collection: Government collected ₹2 lakh crore GST in March; ₹22 lakh crore collection in financial year 2025-26

GST Collection in March 2026: Amid global uncertainty due to the US-Israel and Iran war, a good news has emerged for India. In March 2026, the country’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection broke all records. The government has collected ₹2 lakh crore GST in March 2026. A year ago in March 2025 it was ₹1.83 lakh crore. Whereas in the financial year 2025-26, ₹ 22 lakh crore GST collection was done. Net GST collection increased by 7.1% to ₹19.34 lakh crore. In FY 2025, gross GST collection was Rs 20.25 lakh crore and net GST collection was Rs 18.07 lakh crore.

This figure of GST collection in one month is the highest in 10 months. Earlier in May 2025, the government had collected GST of Rs 2.01 lakh crore.

According to the latest data, the total GST collection in March stood at ₹2,00,344 crore. Imports played the biggest role in this growth. Due to which the revenue received increased by 17.8 percent to Rs 53,861 crore. At the same time, on the domestic front too, revenue of more than Rs 1.46 lakh crore was received with an increase of 5.9 percent. Major changes were made in GST rates by the government in September 2025. Taxes on about 375 items were reduced and tax slabs were simplified mainly to the categories of 5% and 18%. Initially, revenue had fallen to Rs 1.70 lakh crore in November, but since then it has seen a steady recovery.

Maharashtra leads in GST collection

Talking about the states, Maharashtra had the highest contribution in GST collection, from where about Rs 0.13 lakh crore was collected. Apart from this, the government also got good collection from Karnataka and Gujarat. Due to which the overall GST figures have been strengthened. An increase of 10 percent has been recorded in the net GST collection in Andhra Pradesh during March 2026. At the same time, growth has been slow in states like Haryana, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

The highest tax collection was in April 2025

The government had collected Rs 2.37 lakh crore from Goods and Services Tax (GST) in April 2025. There was an increase of 12.6% on annual basis. This is the record of GST collection. Earlier, the record of highest GST collection was made in April 2024. Then the government had raised Rs 2.10 lakh crore.

Total refund increased by 13.8% to Rs 0.22 lakh crore

Whereas total refund increased by 13.8% on annual basis to Rs 0.22 lakh crore. In March 2025, this figure was ₹0.19 lakh crore. Gross Domestic Revenue (CGST, SGST, IGST) stood at Rs 1.46 lakh crore, an increase of 5.9% on an annual basis. While Gross Import Revenue (IGST) stood at Rs 0.54 lakh crore, which was 17.8% on an annual basis. Whereas in March 2026, net cess revenue decreased to Rs. 177 crore. In March 2025 it was Rs 12,043 crore.
