Jyothi Surekha clinches gold, Abhishek wins silver

India’s veteran compound archers, Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Abhishek Verma clinched the gold and silver medals in their respective events at the GT Open in Strassen, Luxembourg, on Sunday.

This was the second of the four Indoor World Series 250 Tournaments at the 2025 Indoor Archery season, after the Swiss Open Lausanne earlier this month.

Jyothi, playing for the first time in the ongoing indoor season, played brilliantly throughout the tournament, clinching the title with a 147-145 win against Sarah Prieels of Belgium in the final.

She earned the fifth seed in the tournament after shooting a brilliant score of 593 in the qualification round. Jyothi started the elimination round swiftly, scoring two perfect 150s in the first two rounds.

However, in the third and fourth rounds, she faced tough competition and was forced to play a shoot-off against fourth seed Lisell Jaatma of Estonia and top seed Elisa Roner of Italy respectively.

But, Jyothi crossed both the huddles by shooting brilliant 10s in the shoot-off and booked a place in the final where she won the title in a much more comfortable manner.

Abhishek Verma’s amazing show

Indian male compound archer, Abhishek Verma had a brilliant start to the competition as he shot a perfect 600/600 in the qualification round and became the first Indian to do so on the international circuit.

With this, he also earned the top seeding in the competition, which he maintained later in the elimination round by shooting three perfect 150s out of the five elimination round matches.

However, he fell just marginally short of finishing on the top of the podium despite a perfect 150 in the final as his opponent, the legendary Mike Schlosser of Netherlands also shot a 150 in the final, forcing a shoot-off.

Both the archers shot a perfect 10 in the shoot-off but on the virtue of the closest to the center shot, the Dutch clinched the gold medal for the second consecutive Indoor archery World Series tournament this season.
