GT vs RCB: Gujarat Titans’ Glenn Phillips in pain after embarrassing defeat

There is an atmosphere of disappointment in the camp of Gujarat Titans (GT) after the crushing defeat of 92 runs at the hands of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the first qualifier match of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026). Gujarat Titans’ star batsman Glenn Phillips has spoken openly on this crushing defeat. He clearly admitted that heavy scoreboard pressure and very poor fielding were the main reasons for the team’s major failure. However, he also expressed hope that the team will forget this disappointing defeat and make a strong comeback in the second qualifier against the winner of the eliminator match.

Rajat Patidar’s Toofan and Scoreboard’s ‘Mountain Pressure’

In this match, Royal Challengers Bangalore, who came to bat first after losing the toss, scored a huge and historic score of 254 runs after losing 5 wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. RCB captain Rajat Patidar led from the front and played an unbeaten and stormy inning of 93 runs in just a few balls. The top order of Gujarat Titans, which came to chase this mountain-like target of 255 runs, collapsed like a house of cards. In front of the deadly bowling of RCB bowlers, the entire Gujarat team collapsed for just 162 runs.

Despite not taking part in the match, Glenn Phillips acknowledged the team’s tactical shortcomings. He said, ‘The target of 250 runs is very difficult in any situation, especially when luck is not on your side. When you are chasing such a big target, the psychological pressure of the scoreboard is immense. Very few teams in cricket history have been able to chase such a target.

The pitch was not bad, the batsmen themselves missed the opportunity

Glenn Phillips also stressed that despite the big score in the first innings, there was no fault in the pitch and it was possible to score runs there. He also gave the example of Rahul Tewatia to prove his point.

Phillips said, ‘Rajat Patidar and other RCB batsmen scored runs easily on this pitch. But from the way Rahul Tewatia played in our innings, it was clear that the wicket was playing very well for batting in the second innings also. We tried to give our best on the field, but when you are chasing 250 runs, your every step should be perfect, which did not happen with us in this match.

Fielding drowned Lutia: Patidar’s catch had to be given up the heaviest

This powerful player from New Zealand put the biggest blame for Gujarat Titans’ defeat on the team’s poor fielding. Referring to the turning point of the match, he said that when Rajat Patidar was playing for just 20 runs, the team had taken a simple catch, which cost the team the defeat.

He said in strong words, ‘The role of fielding becomes most important in knockout matches like playoffs. No matter how well you bowl or bat, if your fielding level is bad, you can never win the match. We made a huge mistake by dropping Rajat’s catch and paid a heavy price for it. There is a simple rule – if you do not catch the catch, you will not be able to win the match.

Hope of comeback in Qualifier 2: ‘A big defeat is better than a defeat of one or two runs’

Despite facing such a big and one-sided defeat, Glenn Phillips’ courage has not diminished. He said that because of this special format of the playoffs, Gujarat Titans are extremely fortunate that they will get another chance to reach the final (Qualifier 2).

Giving an interesting argument about recovering from this defeat, he said, ‘Sometimes it is easier to recover from such a big defeat than those matches where you lose by one or two runs. In a close defeat, you keep thinking again and again that I wish this or that had happened at that moment. But when you’re nowhere close to winning, you just accept that today was not our day. This does not at all mean that our day will not change in the next match also. We will come back stronger.
