Gujarat government passed Uniform Civil Code Bill 2026
Ahmedabad. The Gujarat Assembly has recently approved the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill 2026. The purpose of this bill is to provide uniform laws for citizens of all religions on issues like marriage, divorce and inheritance. In this context, Gujarat has become the second state after Uttarakhand which is going to implement such a law. The law will apply to residents of the state as well as Gujaratis who live outside, but Scheduled Tribes have been kept out of its scope. This bill includes a provision for ban on polygamy and mandatory registration of live-in relationships.
Gujarat becomes the second state with UCC
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel introduced the Gujarat Uniform Civil Code Bill, 2026 in the Assembly on Tuesday. With its passage, Gujarat has become the second state in the country to pass a UCC bill, while Uttarakhand had passed a similar bill in February 2024.
Expert Committee Report
The Gujarat government had constituted an expert committee on the implementation of UCC, which submitted its report a week ago. This proposed law, titled ‘Gujarat Uniform Civil Code, 2026’, will be applicable to residents in and outside the state.
Need for uniform legal framework
This bill will not apply to Scheduled Tribes and certain special groups, whose traditional rights are protected under the Constitution. Its main objective is to establish a uniform legal framework in the state.
ban on more than one marriage
This bill provides for registration and formal termination of live-in relationships. Furthermore, it also prohibits more than one marriage. According to the Bill, marriage under this code will be valid only if neither of the parties has a living spouse at the time of the marriage.
Protest in Ahmedabad
Protests have started in Ahmedabad against this bill. Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) workers demonstrated at Lal Darwaza, during which several people were detained. Apart from this, AIMIM workers are also opposing this bill.
