‘We all make mistakes’: Gulshan Devaiah reacts to Ranveer Singh’s Kantara controversy

Mumbai: Actor Gulshan Devaiah, who played a pivotal role in Rishab Shetty’s ‘Kantara: Chapter 1’, reacted to Ranveer Singh’s mimicry of Daiva on the IFFI stage. Speaking to NDTV about the infamous incident, he stated that his opinion is purely personal. He added that he wasn’t affected by it.

“My personal views are not popular views. I really don’t get affected by such things,” said the actor. He added, “If somebody feels disrespected, I understand. Ranveer apologised as well. Let’s leave it at that. I don’t know what his intent was; only he knows. We all make mistakes when we get excited.”

Further, Gulshan explained how culture was an integral part of those from the Tulu community. About the issue, he stated that everyone should move on from the controversy, as Ranveer has already apologised for his actions.

The Bollywood actor issued a public apology after the massive backlash he faced on social media. He stated, “My intention was to highlight Rishab’s performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know much it would take to perform that particular scene the way he did, for which he has my utmost admiration.” Ranveer added, “I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition and belief in our country. If I have hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologise.”

Meanwhile, Rishab also reacted to the incident without naming Ranveer. He stated, “That makes me uncomfortable. While much of the film is cinema and performance, the Daiva element is sensitive and sacred. Wherever I go, I request people not to perform it on stage or mock it. It is emotionally deeply connected to us.”

Ranveer Singh Kantara controversy

Ranveer, who made an appearance at IFFI, got on stage and talked about watching Rishab’s movie in the theatre.  “I watched Kantara in theatres, and Rishab’s performance was outstanding, especially when the female ghost enters your body; that shot was so amazing,” said the Dhurandhar actor. He then went on to do the controversial enactment of Daiva.
