Gunmen carried out two major attacks on the same day in Honduras, killing 25 including 6 policemen.

Honduras: Two separate bloody incidents that took place in the Central American country Honduras on Thursday shocked the entire country. The gunmen opened fire indiscriminately, killing at least 25 people, including six policemen. According to officials, both the attacks took place in different areas. Public Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Yuri Mora said the first attack took place in a plantation in the Trujillo municipality in northern Honduras. Here armed people opened fire indiscriminately targeting the workers. At least 19 workers died in this attack.

According to the information, this area has been the center of conflict over land and agricultural rights for a long time. There have been frequent disputes over possession of natural resources and agricultural land. Human rights organizations say that environmental and land rights activists working in this area often receive threats.

Last year, the murder of environmental leader Juan Lopez also highlighted the dangerous situation in the region. He was raising voice for the protection of natural resources. According to the non-governmental organization Global Witness, Honduras is counted among the most dangerous countries in the world for environmental activists. According to the report, five environmental activists were murdered in 2024, whereas a year before that 18 people had lost their lives.

Ambush attack on police team

The second incident occurred in the municipality of Omoa in the Cortes department, near the Guatemalan border. Here the attackers targeted the police team. According to police officials, the soldiers were on their way for an anti-gang operation when they were suddenly attacked. Six policemen including a senior officer died in this attack.

Government started action

National police spokesman Edgardo Barahona said it was difficult to determine the exact number of dead in Trujillo because many families immediately took the bodies of their relatives home. He said that special teams have been sent to the spot for investigation. At the same time, the Security Ministry has said that both the National Police and the Armed Forces will conduct joint operations in the affected areas. Forensic experts and prosecutors have also been involved in the investigation so that the attackers can be identified.

Honduras has long faced violence related to gangs and drug trafficking. However, according to World Bank data, the murder rate in the country has decreased slightly compared to earlier. In 2011, 83 murders per 1 lakh people were recorded here, which was a very worrying level.
