Gurmeet Ram Rahim acquitted in Chhatrapati murder case, Punjab-Haryana High Court cancels 2019 sentence
Gurmeet Ram Rahim News: Dera Mukhi has got a big relief in the much talked about Chhatrapati murder case. The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Saturday morning partially modified the decision of the CBI court and acquitted Dera Mukhi in the case. However, the court upheld the life imprisonment of the other three accused convicted in the case – Kuldeep, Nirmal and Kishan Lal.
High Court decision
The High Court gave this decision after hearing the appeals filed by the accused against the decision of the special CBI court. The court, after considering in detail the evidence and arguments related to the case, found that the allegations against Dera Mukhi were not sufficiently proved. On this basis, he was acquitted giving the benefit of doubt. At the same time, the evidence available against the other three accused was found sufficient and their conviction and life sentence were upheld.
CBI investigation
The case is related to the murder of journalist Ramchandra Chhatrapati. Chhatrapati had published serious allegations related to Dera during his time, after which he was shot dead in the year 2002. The incident created a sensation across the region and the investigation into the case was later handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

After a long hearing, the special CBI court had convicted Dera Mukhi and other accused and sentenced them to life imprisonment. All the culprits had filed an appeal against this in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
High Court evaluated the evidence
During the hearing, both the defense and the CBI argued extensively. The court analyzed the records, statements of witnesses and circumstantial facts. The High Court found that the evidence presented against Dera Mukhi was not strong enough to prove beyond doubt his involvement in the criminal conspiracy.

At the same time, against Kuldeep, Nirmal and Kishan Lal, the court found that their role is clearly established from the available evidence and testimonies. On this basis his conviction and life sentence were upheld.
