New Delhi: Guru Tegh Bahadur Shaheedi Diwas, observed annually on November 24, honours the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru. This solemn day commemorates his unwavering courage and sacrifice in defending the rights of others.
Guru Tegh Bahadur was one of the ten Gurus of Sikhism. His sacrifices had a deep influence on the future of Sikhism. He was the ninth Sikh Guru and gave his life to safeguard the fundamental human right, i.e., the freedom to practice religion without interference. His heroic act showed the significance and importance of standing up for one’s beliefs and also protecting the rights of others. In 1675, he was martyred for standing against forced religious conversions imposed by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
Apart from writing the 115 poetic hymns mentioned in the holy Guru Granth Sahib, Guru Tegh Bahadur was also a pacifist who spread peace wherever he travelled. Many places he visited are now home to gurudwaras, which was established in his honour.
