Gus Atkinson Ruled Out of Final Ashes Test Due to Injury
The fast bowler Gus Atkinson has been ruled out of the final test of the Ashes 2025-26 after scans confirmed a left hamstring injury.
The 27-year-old sustained the injury during the fourth test against Australia in Melbourne, and joins England’s prolonged injury list. Atkinson becomes the third fast bowler to leave the tour due to injury after Mark Wood (knee) and Jofra Archer (Side Strain).
During the second day of the fourth test, bowling the final ball of the fifth over of Australia’s second innings. He immediately left the field and was sent for a scan later on Satruday.
He did not return to the field was not required to bat, England coped with his loss well, dismissing the hosts of 132 before chasing down 175 run target with four wickets to spare for their first overseas Ashes test win since January 2011.
With only one test remaining, England have not yet named a replacement. There is cover in the squad, with Durham seamer Matthew Potts still ye to feature and Surrey’s Matthew Fisher an option having been promoted from England Lions after Wood returned home following the second test.
Shoaib Bashir is also an option if England want another spinner to accompany will Jacks. Gus Atkinson is that this latest setback is not a recurrence of the right hamstring injury sustained during the last summers’ test against Zimbabwe and also missed first four matches against India.
He returned for the final match of the series at The Oval to take eight wickets and almost saw England home with the bat.
He was the last wicket to fall as India won by six runs to square the series 2-2. Jofra Archer’s injury brought back into playing 11 for the MCG where he picked three wickets to his tally.
The final test of the Ashes 2025-26 will be played between January 04 and 08 at Sydney Cricket GroundMoore Park.
