Gyaneshwari Yadav wins silver medal in weightlifting for India
India’s star weightlifter Gyaneshwari Yadav had a brilliant performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, where she won a silver medal in the women’s 53 kg category. With this achievement, she added a fifth medal to India’s medal tally. She became the fourth Indian weightlifter to reach the podium at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, after Rishikant Singh (silver), Mirabai Chanu (gold) and Raja Muthupandi (silver).
Gyaneshwari won the silver medal by lifting a total of 199 kg (88 kg in snatch and 111 kg in clean and jerk). The gold medal in this event went to Nigeria. Nigeria’s Onome Omolola Didih (206 kg) won the gold medal, while Canada’s Rebecca Grulks (178 kg) won the bronze medal.
Nigerian weightlifter faces tough competition
The 23-year-old started the competition in the snatch category, easily lifting 82 kg in her first attempt. In her next two attempts, she lifted 85 kg and 88 kg respectively, which was her best attempt of lifting 88 kg in the snatch category. However, after the snatch round, Gyaneshwari fell behind as Nigeria’s Onome Omolola Didih set a higher target by lifting 93 kg.
Gyaneshwari started strongly in the clean and jerk category, lifting 103 kg in the women’s 53 kg final to top the leaderboard. However, Didih lifted 105 kg in her first attempt in the clean and jerk round, which moved Gyaneshwari to second place. The young Indian lifter then lifted 107 kg in her second attempt, but that did not take her to the top spot and she finished in second place.
