H-1B Visa Update: Preparation to end H-1B visa in America? New bill introduced in Parliament, increased tension of Indian IT professionals
News India Live, Digital Desk: A big and worrying news is coming for Indians who dream of working in America. A new bill has been introduced in the US Parliament (Congress), which is directly targeting the H-1B visa system. If this bill becomes law, it will have a big impact not only on thousands of Indian professionals but also on big tech companies like Google, Microsoft and Apple. Why was this bill introduced? A group of American lawmakers, while presenting this bill, have argued that the current H-1B visa system is being used by companies for cheap labour. They claim that due to foreign workers, the jobs and salaries of American citizens are being adversely affected. The main objective of this bill is to promote the “America First” policy and secure employment for the local people. What will be the impact on Indians? India has been the biggest beneficiary of H-1B visas received from America every year. Threat to jobs: The closure of this visa or the rules becoming extremely strict may close the doors for new applicants. Increasing salary pressure: The new rules propose to increase the minimum salary limit very high, making it expensive for companies to hire Indians. Uncertainty in the IT sector: This may have a direct impact on the business model of India’s leading IT companies like TCS, Infosys and Wipro. What will happen next? At present, this is only a bill which has been introduced in the House. To become law, it will have to be passed by the House of Representatives and the Senate and then required to be signed by the President. However, this move has put a question mark on the future of skilled workers who want to settle in America.
