Tigmanshu Dhulia News: When Jaya Bachchan saved Tigmanshu Dhulia’s life…the director of the film ‘Allahabad’ himself told the whole story.
Tigmanshu Dhulia On Jaya Bachchan: A lot of credit for changing the atmosphere of Hindi cinema is given to films like Bandit Queen and Satya. Still, if there is one film that has shown a truly down to earth story, it has to be Tigmanshu Dhulia’s directorial venture Haasil. In this film, Irrfan Khan played a role which gave him recognition. He played a character who could be called an anti-hero rather than the usual villain, a performance that is still considered one of his strongest on-screen roles. However, Irrfan was not Dhulia’s first choice. In an interview given to The Indian Express, the filmmaker told that he had initially talked to his old friend and then rising star Manoj Bajpayee for this role.
Manoj Bajpayee refused to play the role of villain
While talking, Tigmanshu Dhulia said, “To be honest, I did not go to Irrfan initially. Since Satya had already been released, I went to Manoj Bajpayee and he had become a star. Manoj and I were very good friends, still are. When I narrated the story to him, he said, ‘I will not play the villain.’ I told him, ‘Yes, he is a villain, but not that kind, he is an interesting villain.’ But he is my friend; Once he refused, I never went to him again. “I didn’t even try to convince them further.”
What did Tigmanshu Dhulia say about Irrfan Khan?
Dhulia further told how Irrfan finally agreed. ‘Then I went to Irfan and he already knew that I had already pitched this to Manoj. I sent him to Allahabad ten days before the shoot and handed him over to some of my friends. That is all. He went around the place, met people, I don’t really know what he did, but he captured the character right then and there.
In the same conversation, Dhulia also revealed that the production faced major difficulties while trying to shoot at Allahabad University. According to him, senior officials believed that the institution and student politics were shown in a negative light in the film. The situation worsened, and he started receiving threats if he continued shooting.
Why was the word ‘Allahabad’ banned from Hasil?
Talking on this issue, Tigmanshu Dhulia said, ‘I was called to the District Magistrate’s office where all the old student union presidents of the university were sitting. And they warned me that they would break all our shooting carts and blacken my face, put me on a donkey, and parade me around the city. And I was alone, all those men were sitting in front of me, and I started crying.
When Jaya Bachchan saved my life
Seeing the growing anger, Dhulia finally asked Jaya Bachchan for help. ‘Then finally I had to call Jaya ji and she helped me a lot. He called Amar Singh ji and he made some calls, and the rebellion and hostility against me subsided. But they said you can’t use the word ‘Allahabad’ in the film, and somehow I made the film without using the name.
