HAL shares fall 3% sharply as company now out of AMCA race

Shares of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) declined sharply in intraday trade today, falling nearly 3% after reports that the company is no longer part of the AMCA (Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft) programme race.

The stock was trading at ₹3,576.70, down 2.56%, after hitting an intraday low of ₹3,551.00. It opened at ₹3,638.20 and touched a high of ₹3,672.90 during the session, before witnessing selling pressure. The previous close stood at ₹3,670.80.

The decline comes after HAL management, in a recent media interaction, indicated that the company is now out of the race for the AMCA programme, a key next-generation defence project in India.

The AMCA programme is India’s ambitious fifth-generation stealth fighter jet initiative being developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The project aims to develop an advanced multi-role combat aircraft with stealth features, advanced avionics and indigenous capabilities to strengthen India’s air defence ecosystem.

HAL has historically played a critical role in India’s aerospace and defence manufacturing ecosystem, including the production of aircraft such as the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft and other defence platforms. The company has also been closely associated with several indigenous defence programmes, making its exclusion from the AMCA race a notable development for market participants.

The AMCA project is expected to involve significant long-term manufacturing opportunities and high-value contracts, given its strategic importance and scale. HAL’s potential participation was seen as a key growth trigger by investors, and the latest development appears to have weighed on sentiment.

The stock’s reaction reflects concerns over the possible impact on HAL’s future order pipeline, especially in the high-technology defence segment, although the company continues to have a strong existing order book across multiple programmes.

Market participants will continue to monitor further clarity on the execution structure of the AMCA project and HAL’s role, if any, in future phases of India’s indigenous defence manufacturing initiatives.
