Half a century old case… In Sonia Gandhi case, the court asked – Now against whom will the investigation be done and how?
Tezzbuzz Desk- A hearing was held in Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court regarding an old case related to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, in which questions have been raised regarding her citizenship and inclusion of name in the voter list. The case is said to be nearly half a century old, but has been brought before the court again through a criminal revision petition.
The petition alleged that Sonia Gandhi’s name was included in the voter list in the year 1980 even before she obtained Indian citizenship, which was allegedly made possible through fraud and forged documents. The lawyer appearing for the petitioner argued in the court that prima facie this case appears to be one of false declaration and manipulation of documents, which requires investigation. He demanded the court to investigate the case from the angle of forgery and fraud and register an FIR.
However, during the hearing, the court raised questions on the petitioner’s side and said that the case is very old and in such a situation it should be made clear as to against whom and on what basis the scope of investigation will be decided. The court also remarked that the information being presented at present is limited only to the circumstances of addition and deletion of names in the voter list.
On the other hand, the senior lawyer appearing for Sonia Gandhi opposed the petition saying that there is no concrete evidence as to what was her citizenship status at the time of getting her name added. He also raised the question whether a person could not be a citizen before applying. The defense told the court that the petition was seeking an extensive and indefinite investigation without any solid basis.
This petition has been filed by lawyer Vikas Tripathi, challenging the order of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vaibhav Chaurasia dated September 11, 2025, in which earlier the demand for police investigation and registration of FIR in the same case was rejected.
According to the petition, Sonia Gandhi’s name was included in the voter list in the year 1980, while she had applied for Indian citizenship in April 1983. Later in 1982, his name was removed from the list. The petitioner claims that this entire process was done through fraud.
The next hearing in the case has now been scheduled for April 18, where the court will consider further action.
