New Delhi:- 32-year-old Harish Rana, a resident of Ghaziabad, who remained a lifeless body in coma for the last 13 years, is now at the last stage of his life’s journey. After getting approval for euthanasia from the Supreme Court, AIIMS doctors have removed him from the ventilator and ICU and shifted him to a bed in the general ward.
This sad story of Harish Rana started in the year 2013. That day was Rakshabandhan, when Harish, who was doing B.Tech from Chandigarh University, was talking to his sister on the phone on the fourth floor of his PG. Due to sudden loss of balance, he fell down and suffered such serious head injuries that he went into coma.
Harish is in coma for 13 years
Since then his hands and legs are completely inactive. The family tried every possible means of treatment for 13 years, but when there was no hope left, they approached the Supreme Court. Now he has been shifted to the palliative care ward of AIIMS, where special facility of six beds is available.
How is the treatment being stopped?
The process of Harish’s euthanasia is being completed with utmost care and in stages. According to hospital sources, in the last few days his water supply has been completely stopped and the feeding tube in his stomach has been capped.
However, this tube has not been removed from the body yet. On the instructions of the Supreme Court, the medical board to monitor his health has also been expanded, which now includes 10 specialist doctors instead of 5. At present, Harish’s condition is said to be stable, and doctors are still giving him necessary brain-related medicines.

A special team of doctors is also continuously examining the condition of Harish Rana’s body organs, so that a final decision can be taken regarding organ donation. The human aspect is being taken full care of during this entire process. A team of psychiatrists is counseling Harish’s parents and brother daily, so that they can prepare themselves for this difficult farewell. Harish’s mother stays with him most of the time, while his father and other family members visit from time to time. Doctors say that no accurate estimate can be made about the time taken by this entire process.
