Harish Rana, who received euthanasia, died after being in a coma for 13 years

Death occurred in AIIMS after getting permission for passive euthanasia from Supreme Court

New Delhi.
Harish Rana of Ghaziabad died on Tuesday at AIIMS Hospital in Delhi. He was in coma for 13 years. He was kept in the palliative care ward of the hospital and was under intensive observation for the last one week. According to the doctors, on March 23, information was given about his condition and that he could be kept under observation for a few more days. During this time he was alive without food and water and this process was going on for six consecutive days. His parents were hoping for a miracle during this time. His mother was sitting in the corridor of the hospital reciting Hanuman Chalisa.
In the last moments of her son, the mother emotionally said that her son was still breathing and his heartbeat was going on, but he was leaving her. This process was started after the Supreme Court allowed passive euthanasia in the case of Harish Rana. A special team of doctors was constantly monitoring his condition. He died after living without food and water for a week. This matter was considered very complex and sensitive.

In July 2010, Harish Rana took admission in Civil Engineering at Chandigarh University. In the year 2013, he was a final year student. In August 2013, on the day of Rakshabandhan, he fell from the fourth floor of the PG while talking to his sister on mobile. After being seriously injured, he was immediately admitted to PGI Chandigarh. Later in December 2013, he was shifted to LNJP Hospital in Delhi, where doctors diagnosed him with quadriplegia. In this condition, his hands and legs became completely inactive and he was forced to stay in bed for the rest of his life.

In view of his unbearable pain and physical disability, his parents had filed a petition for euthanasia in the Delhi High Court, which was rejected on 8 July 2025. After this the family moved the Supreme Court. Nearly eight months later, on March 11, 2026, the Supreme Court allowed the euthanasia of Harish Rana.
