Visakhapatnam. After becoming ODI World Cup champions, the Indian women’s cricket team will host Sri Lanka for the first time in a five-match T20 series starting in Visakhapatnam on Sunday. The first two matches of the tournament will be played in Visakhapatnam. After which the last three matches of the series will be held at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. This series will run till December 30.
This will be the first international match of the Indian women’s team after becoming world champion in the ODI format last month. The 15-centuries Indian squad for the Sri Lanka series includes several members of the World Cup-winning team, including captain Harmanpreet Kaur, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and player of the series Deepti Sharma. Coach Amol Majumdar has also included 19-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman G Kamalini and left-arm spinner Vaishnavi Sharma in the Indian team for the first time. Kamalini will replace Yastika Bhatia, who is undergoing rehab after suffering an injury in the World Cup.
Meanwhile, Vaishnavi has been rewarded for her performance in the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy 2025. She was the highest wicket taker in this tournament. India last played a T20 series in July and defeated England 3-2. The Sri Lankan team will play in the India series under the captaincy of experienced Chamari Atapattu. This series will be important preparation for both the teams for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 to be held in June-July next year.
