Harry Kane equals 60-year-old Bundesliga record in Bayern Munich’s eight-goal win over Wolfsburg

Harry Kane’s magnificent effort in Bayern Munich’s remarkable 8-1 victory over Wolfsburg was a memorable one for several reasons.

The England captain’s superb, curling effort from the edge of the penalty area put the Bundesliga leaders 6-1 up against the Wolves, and came just 80 seconds after Raphaël Guerreiro had netted the Bavarians’ fifth of the evening.

It also happened to be his 20th league goal of the campaign, helping him equal a Bundesliga record that has stood for 60 years.

Kane has now scored at least 20 Bundesliga goals in each of his three seasons in Germany’s top flight, becoming the first player to do so since former Borussia Dortmund and 1860 Munich striker Friedhelm ‘Timo’ Konietzka between 1963 and 1966.

Asked to describe his latest effort, Kane said: “The space just opened up. I always feel I can use the defender to bend [the ball] around him.

“This one came off perfectly and it couldn’t have been more top corner.”

With 82 goals in 79 league outings overall, Kane is well on course to reach a century of Bundesliga strikes before the current campaign draws to a close – and could send other records tumbling in the process.

Former Dortmund and Bayern star Robert Lewandowski’s single-season tally of 41 Bundesliga strikes remains unsurpassed, but not for long if Kane – who has over twice as many goals as any other player in the division this term – can maintain his current form.

If he finds the net against Cologne on Wednesday, Kane will be on track to beat the Polish marksman’s remarkable haul from the 2020/21 campaign.

Either way, it is going to take something special to deny Kane a third successive Torjägerkanone in 2025/26.
