Harshit Rana ruled out of IPL 2026 for KKR

Kolkata: Kolkata Knight Riders have been dealt a significant setback ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026 season, with pacer Harshit Rana ruled out of the entire tournament due to a knee ligament injury.

The young fast bowler sustained the injury during a warm-up match before the recent T20 World Cup and subsequently underwent surgery in February. He is now expected to undergo an extended rehabilitation period, ruling him out of the upcoming IPL season.

KKR coach calls it a big loss

KKR head coach Abhishek Nayar described Rana’s absence as a major blow to the team, highlighting his importance over the past few seasons.

“It is a big blow because Harshit Rana has been an integral part of this team for the last couple of seasons, including the championship season. Over the last year, he has really grown as a cricketer,” Nayar said.

He also admitted that replacing the young pacer will not be easy, though the franchise has begun evaluating options.

“We will always miss Harshit Rana, it’s not easy to replace him. But we have looked at a few bowlers and will take a call soon,” he added.

Injury concerns deepen for KKR

Rana’s absence comes at a time when KKR are already dealing with multiple fitness concerns in their pace department.

Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana is also doubtful for the start of the tournament as he continues rehabilitation. According to Sri Lanka Cricket, Pathirana is yet to undergo the mandatory fitness tests required to participate in the IPL.

This double setback has disrupted KKR’s bowling plans significantly, forcing the management to consider backup options.

Several domestic pacers, including Navdeep Saini, Akash Madhwal, Simarjeet Singh, Sandeep Warrier, and KM Asif, have been training at Eden Gardens as potential replacements.

Season schedule and early challenges

KKR will begin their IPL 2026 campaign against Mumbai Indians on March 29, followed by their first home match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 2.

With key bowlers unavailable, the team faces an early challenge in finding the right balance and maintaining competitiveness in the opening phase of the tournament.

Focus on Varun Chakravarthy’s form

Meanwhile, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane expressed confidence in spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who endured a mixed T20 World Cup campaign.

Although Chakravarthy finished as one of the joint highest wicket-takers with 14 scalps, his economy rate of 9.25 runs per over drew criticism.

Rahane, however, defended the spinner, stating that opposition batters had simply performed well against him.

“I don’t see any problem with Varun’s bowling ability. The opposition played him really well — credit to them,” Rahane said, adding that the short break after the tournament would help him regain rhythm.

Conclusion: KKR face tough start to IPL 2026

With Harshit Rana ruled out and uncertainty surrounding other pacers, KKR head into IPL 2026 with concerns over their bowling resources.

The franchise will need to quickly identify suitable replacements and adapt to the challenges if they are to make a strong start. How effectively they manage these setbacks could play a decisive role in shaping their campaign.
