Freese holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Harvard University, according to U.S. television news network NBC News. His thesis examined the rising franchise values of clubs in Major League Soccer and the costs and benefits of hosting the Olympic Games. He has also taken sports business courses through the Wharton MBA program at the University of Pennsylvania.
Freese comes from a family with a strong academic background. His paternal grandparents were German-born scientists who immigrated to the United States to work at the National Institutes of Health.
His father, Andrew Freese, was a neurosurgeon who earned undergraduate and medical degrees from Harvard before completing a Ph.D. in neurobiology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was recognized as a pioneer in gene therapy and died of kidney failure in 2021 at the age of 61.
His mother Marcia holds an MBA in healthcare management and remains active in the field, according to Freese’s profile published by the Major League Soccer. She supported her son’s football development while building her career, regularly taking him to training sessions and matches during his childhood.
Freese’s two older brothers also graduated from Harvard.
