Haryana: Yamuna water agreement between Haryana and Rajasthan towards implementation, written approval given to pipeline project

Haryana News: The Yamuna water agreement pending since 1994 between Haryana and Rajasthan has now moved towards getting on the ground. Haryana Government based in Yamunanagar Hathnikund Barrage Has sent its written consent to the Rajasthan government on the proposal to lay a pipeline from 1000 km to Hasiyawas (Churu) in Rajasthan. With this, the way has been cleared for preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the project.

Union Minister last month CR Patil in the presence of Bhajan Lal Sharma And Nayab Singh Saini An in-principle agreement was reached on the pipeline project. A new MOU was also signed between the two states in February 2024, after which Haryana has now sent formal approval.

Under the project, three parallel pipelines of about 265 km long will be laid from Hathnikund to Hasiyawas in Churu district of Rajasthan. This scheme will provide about 577 million cubic meters of water to Churu, Sikar and Jhunjhunu districts. Haryana has also demanded water for its drinking water schemes at some places in between.

Earlier, no consensus could be reached on the proposal of providing water through open canal. Rajasthan feared that the entire water would not be able to reach through the open canal. Several revised proposals were sent between 2017 and 2021, but the matter could not move forward due to technical and delivery differences.

Under the Yamuna Water Agreement signed on May 12, 1994, of the total water sharing, 40.6% was allocated to Haryana, 35.1% to Uttar Pradesh, 10.4% to Rajasthan, 6.3% to Delhi and 1.7% to Himachal Pradesh. The provision of providing additional water to Rajasthan during the monsoon period (July to October) is also included in this agreement.
