Has America really enslaved India? Exemption on purchase of Russian oil for 30 days, AAP cornered Modi government

India gets exemption to buy Russian oil: US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant, who has imposed tariffs against India on buying Russian oil, has said that to keep the flow of oil in the global market, the Treasury Department is giving a 30-day temporary exemption to allow Indian refiners to buy Russian oil. After this comment, political turmoil has erupted in India. Aam Aadmi Party has raised the question whether any other country should decide what India should buy and when.

Former Deputy CM of Delhi and AAP leader Manish Sisodia, while replying to the post of US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant, wrote, ‘Being an Indian, my blood is boiling after reading the tweet given below by the US Finance Minister (Treasury Secretary). America is saying that- “We are giving 30 days permission to India so that India can buy oil from Russia.” Just read this sentence carefully. The minister of another country is giving “permission” to the world’s largest democracy to decide from which country it should buy oil and for how many days. If this is true, and I would heartily wish it were false, but if true then this is not just a statement, it is a declaration to enslave us.’

Sisodia further wrote, ‘Today our India is not a colony. It is an independent sovereign nation. And everyone from Bhagat Singh to Mahatma Gandhi had not given this freedom so that after 80 years any other country could decide what India should buy and when. The Indian government should give a clear and strong answer on this issue. National sovereignty and the right to take independent decisions cannot be a matter of compromise at any cost.

He wrote, ‘The country wants to know whether this is true? Has America really enslaved India? Has the Prime Minister really signed such a document of India’s slavery on the basis of which America is openly making statements about us like “We have given permission to India… We will allow India to do this, we will not allow that to do”? The country wants to know – has our situation really become so weak that now India will have to take permission from America even to buy oil?

Taking a dig at the Modi government, the AAP leader wrote, ‘And then we are told that India has become a “world leader” today. What kind of world leader’s foreign policy is this? Where any other country decides what India will buy, from whom it will buy and for how long? And what are the compulsions that the Prime Minister of India is not saying a word about this? Why is not a word being spoken to the 56-inch chest from which Modi abuses everyone from Nehru to Arvind Kejriwal to his heart’s content, about America’s nonsense of “enslaveing India”?

US Treasury Secretary’s statement

Earlier, US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant announced exemption for India to buy Russian oil on ex post. Scott Besant wrote on X, ‘Due to President Trump’s energy agenda, oil and gas production has reached its highest level ever. To keep oil flowing into global markets, the Treasury Department is granting a temporary 30-day waiver to allow Indian refiners to buy Russian oil. “This deliberate short-term approach will not provide any significant financial benefit to the Russian government because it only allows transactions that involve oil already trapped in the ocean.”

The US Treasury Secretary further wrote, ‘India is an important partner of the United States, and we fully expect New Delhi to increase its purchases of US oil. This workaround will reduce the pressure created by Iran’s attempt to hold global energy hostage. Let us tell you that during the trade deal with India, America had said that if India buys oil from Russia again, then 25 percent tariff will be imposed on it again. Regarding which Congress had taken the government to task.
