Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir is someone who is known to wear his emotions on his sleeve. Gambhir has lost his cool and as a mentor in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on many occasions and even in international cricket against Pakistan.

Former India and Kolkata Knight Riders batter Manoj Tiwary exposed Gambhir’s behaviour in the dressing room. In a candid interview with ‘Lallantop’, former Bengal captain Tiwary revealed his frustrations about not having a public relations team, which he believes affected his career progression.

“When a new player emerges, he gets media coverage, and maybe that’s one of the reasons he got upset with me. If I had a PR team, I could have been the India captain today,” Tiwary stated.

Recalling an incident at Eden Gardens, Tiwary shared details of a heated argument over his batting position that escalated quickly.

“I was really upset and went to the washroom to cool down, but he barged in and said, ‘This attitude won’t work. I will never play with you (I won’t let you play).’ He kept going on and on. I confronted him, asking why he was talking like that. It felt like a threat. Wasim Akram also came in. He was our bowling coach, so he calmed things down, otherwise haathapai bhi ho sakta tha (There could have been a physical fight too),” the 39-year-old recounted.

Their rivalry wasn’t limited to domestic matches, as Tiwary recalled another tense encounter during a 2015 Ranji Trophy match, where Gautam Gambhir allegedly hurled abuses at him from the slip position.

“I was taking my guard, and he started abusing me from the slips. Some words should never be used—maa-behen ki gaali (offensive slurs). Then he challenged me, saying, ‘Meet me in the evening, I will thrash you.’ I responded, ‘Why wait until the evening? Let’s settle it now.’ I wasn’t afraid,” Tiwary said.

The situation escalated further when the umpire intervened but was brushed aside.

“The umpire tried to stop him, but he pushed him away too. When the over ended and I moved to the non-striker’s end, he continued hurling insults from mid-off. Unfortunately, umpires can’t do much in such situations — he’s a big player, and they fear he could use his influence against them,” Tiwary concluded.
