20 TMC MPs rebelled? Kakoli Ghosh sent letter to Om Birla to support NDA

New Delhi. The political crisis engulfing Trinamool Congress (TMC) is now deepening. After the defeat in the West Bengal Assembly Elections, the rebellion of 58 MLAs has now reached the TMC parliamentary party as well. The speculations of a split in Trinamool Congress were confirmed by the party’s Lok Sabha MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar on Monday. MP Kakoli Ghosh has said that along with me, about 20 TMC MPs have decided to support the BJP-led NDA.

This announcement has come at a time when TMC Supremo Mamata Banerjee was attending the India Block meeting in Delhi to prepare a nationwide strategy against the BJP. Kakoli Ghosh said that around 20 TMC MPs have conveyed their position to the Lok Sabha Speaker to support the National Democratic Alliance.

Kakoli Ghosh said- will support NDA

TMC currently has 28 Lok Sabha MPs and 12 Rajya Sabha MPs. Asserting that she continues to be the party’s chief whip in the Lok Sabha, Dastidar said the decision has been taken after discussions with fellow MPs. The development comes amid a growing internal crisis within the Mamata Banerjee-led party, which has seen open protests and resignations of senior leaders in recent days.

According to sources, the dissident MPs intend to argue before the Speaker that Dastidar remains the legitimate chief whip of the party in the Lok Sabha and any subsequent announcement made by the party leadership was not completed through the required parliamentary process.

Will not join BJP, but will support TMC MP

According to sources in the dissident camp, the MPs have not immediately opted to resign from TMC or join BJP. Instead, they intend to act as a separate parliamentary faction, supporting the NDA. This is a strategy designed to ensure protection under the anti-defection law.

Ghosh Dastidar said the group had decided to align itself politically with the NDA, arguing that it reflected public opinion. He said that we have accepted the public’s decision and believe that our future political path should be according to the NDA. The TMC leadership has not yet responded to these claims.

Why a big blow for Mamata Banerjee and TMC?

TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee had reached Delhi on Sunday itself for the India Block meeting. It was being claimed that during this time Mamata Banerjee can hold a meeting with party MPs. However, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar’s claim has badly shaken TMC. In West Bengal, about 58 MLAs have already separated from the party and opened a front against Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee. At the same time, amidst the presence of Mamata Banerjee in Delhi, TMC MPs’ announcement of supporting NDA shows Didi’s weakening hold on the party.

This mathematical equation of rebellion in the parliamentary party is politically important. TMC currently has 28 Lok Sabha MPs, of which one seat is vacant after the death of Basirhat MP Haji Nurul Islam. The support of 20 MPs would comfortably cross the two-thirds threshold required for protection under the anti-defection law. The development comes a day after dissident MPs held a closed-door meeting in New Delhi and could raise questions over the party leadership’s authority over elected representatives.

For Mamata Banerjee, the crisis has now ranged from organizational discontent to the party losing control over a large section of its parliamentary party, which could have far-reaching consequences for both the TMC and the opposition faction at the national level.

Didi got a shock in Rajya Sabha also

Rajya Sabha MP and TMC leader Sukhendu Shekhar Roy on Monday announced his resignation from the post of Rajya Sabha MP and also leaving the primary membership of the party. Former TMC MP Sukhendu Shekhar Roy on Monday criticized TMC over the RG tax issue, saying that the state leadership is cut off from ground realities.

After resigning, Roy said that power had gone to his head to such an extent that he felt no one in the world could touch him. He alleged that ministers, panchayat leaders, councilors and mayors who have been in power for the last fifteen years are beyond the reach of the people, while grassroots party workers have been sidelined.
