New Delhi: Indian weddings are famous all over the world for their grandeur, delicious dishes and royal hospitality. At some places the guests are welcomed with showers of flowers, at some places fifty-six bhogs are served in silver utensils. But these days a video of a wedding is creating a stir on social media, where the guests are not given sweets or snacks, but cigarette, beedi and gutkha being served. Seeing this “intoxicating” style of hospitality, people are both surprised and laughing.
Cigarette and beedi in tray: Waiter roaming like a starter
In this video going viral, it can be seen that a waiter is roaming around with a tray in his hand in the wedding pandal. Usually the waiter’s tray contains kebabs, paneer tikka or cold drinks, but here the scene was completely different. The waiter’s tray was decorated with expensive brands of cigarettes, bundles of beedis and packets of gutkha. The guests were also seen enthusiastically choosing the brand of their choice and blowing smoke rings. It all seemed so normal, as if appetizers were being distributed at a party.

Regional Tradition: Many users claimed that in some rural areas of Garhwal in western Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Uttarakhand, giving hookah or tobacco to guests is an old tradition and considered a sign of respect.
Royal Treat: Referring to the rising prices of cigarettes after the budget, one user jokingly wrote, “Getting such expensive cigarettes for free is no less than a royal treat.”
Funny comments: Another user wrote, “The wedding procession must have come from Haryana,” while another taunted, “When there is so much money, I don’t know what to do.”

Till the time of writing this video, this video has been viewed millions of times and thousands of people have liked it. While on one hand people are considering it funny, on the other hand some people are also calling this kind of promotion of tobacco in public events as bad from health point of view. However, the video has definitely proved that there is no dearth of ‘extravagant’ things in Indian weddings.
