Ken Haun, chief scientist at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, said Kilauea's eruption began around 2 a.m. and “may continue for some time.”

The USGS noted that high levels of volcanic gases – primarily water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), and sulfur dioxide (SO2) – are the primary threat of concern, as this threat could have far-reaching effects downwind.
