Hawala agent close to Sukesh Chandrashekhar arrested after being deported from UAE
New Delhi. The Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) of Delhi Police arrested a key associate of swindler Sukesh Chandrashekhar upon his arrival here on Tuesday after being deported from the UAE. He was absconding for almost five years. An officer gave this information. He said that the accused has been identified as Nawaz Kakkat Ismail alias Nawaz KI.
The EOW said he was an important financial facilitator and hawala operator for Chandrashekhar, who helped him remit the proceeds of crime to India and abroad, especially Dubai. “On arrival at Indira Gandhi International Airport, he was taken into custody by the EOW team. During preliminary interrogation, Nawaz admitted his role in the gang and revealed that he came in contact with Chandrashekhar through his wife,” the EOW said in a statement.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (EOW) Amit Verma said, “The case pertains to an FIR lodged by the Special Cell from Rohini jail in connection with the alleged extortion gang run by Chandrashekhar. Chandrashekhar and his associates had extorted more than Rs 217 crore from a businesswoman, Aditi Singh. So far, 22 accused, including Chandrashekhar and his wife Leena Paulose, have been arrested in this case.”
He said that Nawaz was absconding since 2021 and he was suspected to have fled India. Subsequently, EOW had issued a Red Corner Notice against him through Interpol. He was detained by authorities in Abu Dhabi and later deported to India on May 4, the statement said. He was produced before a Delhi court, which granted his 10-day police custody for further questioning.
