HCMC metro begins charging fares after free trial

Ticket prices range from VND6,000 to VND20,000 (US$0.24-0.79) per trip, with multiple payment options available, including bank cards and a dedicated metro app.

Passengers can choose from single-journey tickets or unlimited-ride passes valid for one day, three days, or one month. The monthly pass costs VND300,000, while students enjoy a 50% discount. One-day and three-day passes are priced at VND40,000 and VND90,000, respectively.

Certain groups, including war heroes, people with disabilities, seniors, and children under six, qualify for free travel. These passengers can access free rides using special cards or their ID cards, depending on eligibility.

Payment methods

For single-journey tickets paid in cash, passengers can purchase a paper ticket with a QR code at ticket booths and scan it at the gate. Cashless payments are also available by tapping a MasterCard on the gate’s reader, with support for Napas cards starting Jan. 24. Additional card options, including Visa, JCB, Amex, and UPI, will be integrated later.

Alternatively, riders can use the HCMC Metro app to select routes, pay for tickets, and receive QR codes for gate access. MoMo e-wallet payments are also supported for single trips.

Passengers purchasing one-day, three-day, or monthly passes must register an account on the HCMC Metro app. After payment, a QR code is generated for gate access. From Feb. 15, monthly pass holders can link their passes to their ID cards for entry.

Electric bus connections

In tandem with the metro, 17 electric bus routes connecting metro stations began charging fares on Tuesday, following a free service period. Single-journey bus tickets cost VND5,000–6,000, with a discounted fare of VND3,000 for students. A pack of 30 tickets is available for VND112,500. Senior citizens, children, and people with disabilities are exempt from bus fares.

Launched on Dec. 22, 2024, the Ben Thanh–Suoi Tien metro is HCMC’s first urban railway. During the month-long free trial, nearly 2.8 million passenger trips were recorded—247% higher than initial projections. The busiest day was Jan. 1, with over 275,000 trips as residents celebrated with New Year with the service.

Currently, nine trains operate daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., with journeys between Suoi Tien Theme Park and Ben Thanh Market taking approximately 30 minutes. For the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday, operating hours will be extended, with trains running past midnight on New Year’s Eve to accommodate revelers and fireworks viewers.
