He should get Bharat Ratna… Rahul Gandhi wrote to PM Modi on Kanshi Ram’s birth anniversary
New Delhi, March 15. Former Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding posthumous award of ‘Bharat Ratna’ to Kanshi Ram, the great leader of the social justice movement. Rahul Gandhi said in his letter on Sunday that Honorable Kanshi Ram played an important role in changing the direction of Indian politics and had awakened political consciousness among the Bahujan community and the poor classes.
He said that his efforts strengthened the foundation of Indian democracy and made the political system more representative and just. The Congress leader said, “Today when we are celebrating Kanshi Ram ji’s birth anniversary and remembering his life and contributions. I am writing this letter to request you to posthumously honor him with Bharat Ratna. He told the people that they have their vote, their voice and their representation and this country belongs to all equally. Due to his efforts, many people, who had never thought of coming into public life, started considering politics as a medium to achieve justice and equality.”
Rahul Gandhi wrote that our Constitution promises equality, dignity and participation to every Indian and Kanshi Ram ji dedicated his life to making these promises meaningful to those at the lowest rung of society. The Congress leader said, “For many years, Dalit intellectuals, leaders and social workers have been demanding to honor Kanshi Ram ji with Bharat Ratna. This demand has been raised continuously and with deep feeling.
Recently I attended an event in Lucknow, where leaders and participants strongly reiterated this demand, reflecting widespread public sentiment. Awarding him Bharat Ratna will recognize his great contribution towards our nation. It will also be an honor to the aspirations of millions of people who still see him as a symbol of empowerment and hope.”
