He was absconding for years after killing his wife, police caught him as soon as he booked the cylinder.

Former Captain Sandeep Tomar, who murdered his wife Shweta Singh in 2013 in Abohar, Punjab, has finally been caught. He was absconding since the year 2022 by dodging the police. To solve this high-profile case, the SIT (Special Investigation Team) of Fazilka Police and NATGRID (National Intelligence Grid) worked in excellent coordination. Sandeep had also got married for the second time by hiding his identity but as soon as he booked a gas cylinder using his old PAN card, NetGrid tracked his location and he was nabbed from Pandhurna in Madhya Pradesh.

This case started when Sandeep Tomar was posted in Abohar Cantt. Just 5 months after their marriage, he strangled his wife Shweta Singh to death and tried to make it look like suicide. But after the forensic investigation confirmed the murder, in 2014 the court sentenced him to life imprisonment and he was also dismissed from the army.

The accused disappeared after getting bail

Sandeep had served his sentence in Firozpur jail for about 5 years. In the year 2019, Punjab and Haryana High Court granted him bail. The matter became serious when in September 2022, the High Court upheld his life sentence and ordered him to go back to jail. Due to fear of going to jail, he ran away instead of surrendering, after which the police was continuously searching for him.

second marriage by changing identity

To avoid arrest, Sandeep had completely changed his identity. Sometimes he became a property dealer in Zirakpur, and sometimes he kept hiding in Odisha and Bengaluru. Eventually he started working as a manager in a juice factory in Pandhurna, Madhya Pradesh. Not only this, he had hidden his real identity and got married there for the second time and established a new world.

The whole secret was revealed by one mistake

A small carelessness of Sandeep cost him dearly. He used his old PAN card for his bank account and salary. As soon as he booked and paid for the gas cylinder online from this account, the National Intelligence Grid system issued an alert. Fazilka police had been keeping an eye on his bank records for a long time and this one digital mistake gave the police the clue to his whereabouts.

Police laid a trap

After this, Fazilka Police along with Madhya Pradesh Police conducted a joint operation. On the basis of mobile tower location and the address received from the gas agency, the police caught him from his house. On March 28, 2026, he was brought to Punjab and sent to jail again on the orders of the court. There was a lot of pressure from the High Court on the police to arrest the culprit in this case soon.
