‘He was depressed…’: Amitabh Bachchan opens up about father Harivansh Rai’s first marriage, says this about Teji Bachchan

Amitabh Bachchan, the one and only Big B of Bollywood, has always been extremely open about his life. The actor has never shied away from discussing his personal life with the audience. Big B, who is currently hosting the quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati 16, recently spoke about his father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan. While many believed that Teji Bachchan was Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s first wife, that is not the case. Yes, you read that right!

Harivansh Rai Bachchan was initially married to Shyama. During a special episode featuring Aamir Khan and his son Junaid Khan, Amitabh opened up about his father’s first wife and shared, “My father’s first wife passed away. After that, he went into a very serious and depressed state. The poems he wrote during that time were very dark and filled with sorrow. A few years later, he started attending poetry recitals to earn some money.”

Amitabh also narrated the story of how his father met Teji Bachchan in Bareilly. He said, “My father had a friend in Bareilly who invited him to visit. During dinner, the friend requested my father to recite a poem. But before my father could begin, his friend asked his wife to call my mother (Teji Bachchan) into the room. That was the first time my father met my mother. After she arrived, my father began reciting the poem Kya Karoon Samvedna Lekar Tumhari, and my mother was moved to tears. My father’s friend then left them alone in the room and went outside.”

The video of this revelation is now making rounds on the internet, and the audience is adoring the story of how Big B’s parents met. For those unaware, Harivansh Rai Bachchan married Teji Bachchan in 1941. The couple was blessed with two sons. While Amitabh recently turned 82, he has a younger brother who is five years younger than him.
