Head massage horror: Man suffers stroke after treatment at salon; check risk factors

New Delhi: In a shocking incident, a 30-year-old man in Karnataka’s Ballari suffered a stroke after getting a head massage at a salon. According to reports, the barber twisted his neck while administering a free head massage, following which the man allegedly lost the ability to speak and felt weakness on his left side. After the incident, it took him two months to recover. Reports also claim that the massage led to cutting off the blood flow to his brain triggering the stroke.

It is a fact that everyone loves head massages as they are relaxing! But a head massage giving you a stroke is beyond belief. This is quite concerning hence, to understand in detail can something happen and if yes then what triggers a stroke, News9, spoke to Dr Pankaj Agarwal, Head of the Department of Neurology, Gleneagles Hospital Parel Mumbai, who said, “Everyone loves head massages, however, one has to be extremely cautious while opting for a head massage. Instead of relaxation, it can turn into a nightmare. Head massages are commonly opted for by many people. However, a well-executed head massage can improve blood circulation, reduce tension, and help you get rid of those unpleasant headaches. Those with pre-existing medical conditions such as severe hypertension or vascular disorders should be careful as a head massage can also be one of the reasons behind the occurrence of a stroke that can turn fatal.”

What can trigger a stroke after a head massage?

Dr Agarwal explained, “Applying too much pressure or performing abrupt manoeuvres and neck twisting during a massage can compromise these vessels in people and lead to a stroke when the blood flow to the brain is interrupted or reduced due to excessive pressure on the blood vessels. There are sudden and forceful neck movements during a head massage that can raise one’s risk of a stroke and cause brain damage. This stroke can be called “salon stroke” or “beauty parlour stroke”.”

“It will be imperative for everyone to be alert while taking a head massage. Ensure the masseur is well-trained and certified and the pressure should be light while massaging. Discontinue the head massage, if you feel a headache, nausea vomiting, or neck pain. Consult a doctor on an immediate basis to be safe. Timely stroke treatment includes anticoagulants to prevent further clots for recovery. Delay in treatment can lead to permanent disability like paralysis or loss of life.”
