‘He’s his own enemy’: MCA slams Prithvi Shaw for Vijay Hazare Trophy outburst
New Delhi: Days after taking the internet by storm after sharing a social media post over his snub from Vijay Hazare Trophy snub, Prithvi Shaw drew sharp criticism from Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA), who slammed the Mumbai batter for his emotional outburst.
MCA brushed aside Shaw’s reaction after his exclusion from Mumbai’s Vijay Hazare squad, claiming that the temperamental player has repeatedly flouted disciplinary norms and is “his own enemy.”
A senior official of the MCA told PTI that the Board was “forced to hide” him on the field due to his poor fitness, discipline and attitude on multiple instances.
Shaw’s social media outburst and the MCA’s response
Shaw shared an emotional post and expressed his frustration at being ignored from the 16-member squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The social media post, which went viral on the internet, was shared days after Mumbai’s title-winning Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign. Shaw was also part of the winning team but failed to make notable contributions with the bat.
The MCA official, on condition of anonymity, revealed during SMAT, that Mumbai were mostly playing with 10 fielders as the team was forced to hide Shaw, who was struggling to pick the balls in the field.
The official also said that Shaw was troubled reaching the ball while batting and questioned his fitness, discipline and attitude. He also claimed that even the senior members of the team started complaining about his attitude.
MCA details Shaw’s disciplinary issues and fitness concerns
“I’ll tell you one thing. No one is Shaw’s enemy. He is his own enemy,” the MCA official said.
According to reports, Shaw regularly missed training sessions during SMAT and often entered the team hotel at “six in the morning” after being out for most of the night.
Shaw has attracted a lot of attention for all the wrong reasons and the official claimed he should be focusing on his game and fitness and forget about getting any favours from such social media posts. Shreyas Iyer, Shaw’s skipper in the Mumbai squad, also questioned the child prodigy’s work ethic and issued a stern statement following Mumbai’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy win.
Since scoring a century on his Test debut in 2018 as an 18-year-old against the West Indies, Shaw has flattered to deceive on the international circuit as well.
Owing to his off-field issues, he has failed to cement his place in white-ball squads as well and has not featured for India since 2021.
Last month, Shaw, who was once dubbed as the next big thing in Indian cricket, hit a new low when he couldn’t find any takers in the IPL auction despite a low base price of Rs 75 lakh.
