“He’s obviously staying”: Marotta confirms Cristian Chivu will lead Inter Milan next season
Inter Milan president Giuseppe Marotta has firmly shut down any speculation over the managerial future at San Siro, declaring that Cristian Chivu is staying put for the 2026-27 season. “He’s obviously staying, he’s gonna be with us again. Chivu is one of the best emerging managers in Europe,” Marotta stated, highlighting the club’s strong faith in the Romanian coach.
Chivu, appointed in June 2025 on a two-year deal until June 2027 after replacing Simone Inzaghi, has exceeded expectations in his first senior season. Inter currently top Serie A with a healthy lead and remain in strong contention for the Coppa Italia, positioning themselves for a potential domestic double. His “Made in Inter” approach rooted in the club’s youth system and defensive heritage has earned widespread praise for tactical maturity and squad management.
Despite an early exit from the Champions League, the Nerazzurri hierarchy has backed Chivu throughout. Recent reports indicate that contract renewal negotiations are well underway, with Inter preparing a new long-term agreement until 2028 or 2029, including a substantial salary increase from his current €2.5 million per year. A verbal agreement is reportedly close, with formalities expected once the Scudetto is secured.
Marotta’s endorsement reflects Inter’s vision of continuity. The 45-year-old former defender, who played 168 times for the club and won major honours including the 2010 Treble, is seen as the ideal figure to guide the team through an upcoming squad rebuild. Plans for next season include greater coaching input on transfers and potential formation tweaks.
With Marotta’s clear message, Chivu’s position is rock-solid. The former Parma boss is not only staying he is being positioned as the long-term architect of Inter’s next competitive era.
