High-alert Indigo plane made emergency landing on runway 28 at Delhi Airport. Engine failed in mid-air, 161 passengers were on board.
News India Live, Digital Desk: There was chaos at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport of the country’s capital on the morning of Saturday (28 March 2026) when news of a technical fault in the engine of an IndiGo plane coming from Visakhapatnam was received. The pilot informed ATC about engine failure in the air, after which ‘full emergency’ was immediately declared at the airport. The matter of relief is that the plane landed safely and all the passengers are safe. What happened in the air? (The Crisis) IndiGo flight 6E 579 took off from Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh for Delhi. Shortly before reaching Delhi, the pilot felt heavy vibrations and technical fault in engine number 1. Time: Around 10:39 am, the pilot declared emergency. Runway 28 alert: ATC immediately evacuated runway number 28 and stopped all landings-takeoffs. Fire tenders deployed: Delhi Fire Service received the call at 10:53 am, after which several fire engines were deployed on the runway. The aircraft touched down on Runway 28 at 10:54 am. There were 161 passengers and crew on board. As soon as the plane landed, it was taken to the isolation bay, where technical experts began the investigation. All passengers were evacuated from the plane safely. IndiGo spokesperson said that there were no injuries to any passenger and alternative arrangements were made for them. The aircraft was on ‘lease’ from a foreign company. The surprising thing is that this aircraft (Boeing 737-800) was not IndiGo’s own. According to media reports, IndiGo had taken it on wet-lease from Turkish company ‘Corendon Airlines’. Engine malfunctions of Boeing aircraft have been a matter of international concern for some time now. IndiGo’s official statement IndiGo said in its statement: “Flight 6E 579 coming from Visakhapatnam to Delhi was detected with a technical fault just before landing. As a precaution and following the standard procedures (SOP), the pilots requested for priority landing. The aircraft has landed safely and is being thoroughly inspected.”
