High Court is strict on Panchayat elections, question – Why are elections not being held on time, why the delay?

Bureau Prayagraj. Allahabad High Court has adopted a strict stance regarding the delay in Panchayat elections. The court asked the government why elections are not being conducted within the time limit? Will he be able to complete the election process within the constitutional deadline or not? This hearing took place on the PIL of advocate Imtiaz Hussain. The petition demanded that a time-bound program for the entire process of Panchayat elections should be fixed in advance and kept on record.

The Yogi government had filed an affidavit in the Lucknow bench of the High Court saying that a dedicated Backward Class (OBC) Commission would be formed before the local body elections. Reservation on Panchayat seats will be decided on the basis of the report of this commission, only after which the election process will proceed.

The case was being heard by the bench of Justice Rajan Rai and Justice Awadhesh Chaudhary. In fact, in a petition filed in the High Court, the rights of the existing Backward Classes Commission were challenged. The petitioner had raised the question that the present commission does not have the legal right to determine reservation in local body elections. In response to this, the government clarified that a new dedicated commission will be constituted and action will be taken as per the directions of the Supreme Court. No report has come yet on the formation of OBC Commission.

Different statements are coming out within the government regarding Panchayat elections 2026. On one hand, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya is saying that it is difficult to hold the elections on time, while on the other hand, Panchayati Raj Minister OP Rajbhar says that the elections will be held on time only. After these statements the discussion has intensified in political circles.
