Hi-tech cyber attack in Bengaluru, know how to save your bank account
A tech professional from Bengaluru had to face huge loss due to the new methods of cyber fraudsters. The fraudsters committed a fraud of Rs 2.8 crore by stealing their banking information. The fraud involved the use of a fake Citibank representative, a fake SIM card and pre-programmed mobile phones.
Started with WhatsApp call
On November 27, 2024, the victim received a call on WhatsApp from a person claiming to be a representative of Citibank. He said that the victim's credit card has not been approved and he will have to get a new SIM card.
A few days later, the victim received a package addressed to City Union Bank. This packet contained a mobile phone of MI 13C company and a new SIM card.
Fraud started as soon as the SIM card was inserted
Without suspecting anything, the victim inserted that SIM card in the phone. But they did not know that dangerous apps were already installed on the phone. These apps were transmitting the OTP and banking information received on their phones to the fraudsters.
After the SIM card was activated on December 1, 2024, the fraudsters withdrew Rs 2.8 crore from the victim's HDFC bank accounts. His fixed deposit money was also included in this amount.
Method of fraud: Pre-prepared mobile phone and SIM card
The swindlers sent a pre-programmed mobile phone.
There were apps in this phone which used to steal OTP and SMS and send them to the fraudsters.
As soon as the SIM card was activated, the fraudsters started withdrawing money from the bank accounts.
Police engaged in investigation
The victim has lodged a complaint at Whitefield Police Station. Police have started investigation under the IT Act regarding this incident.

Always keep OTP and banking information secret.
Verify any banking related call or message immediately.
