Highway Milestone: Why are different colored milestones installed on the roadside? Know what they mean

Highway Milestone: We see many things in everyday life which we probably never pay attention to. One of them is the colorful milestones installed on the roadside. Have you ever noticed why these milestones are yellow, green, orange or white-black in color?

Are they just for looks or do they have some special meaning? Let us know what these different colored stones indicate and what kind of roads they are connected to-

yellow milestone

If you are traveling on a road and see a yellow colored milestone, then understand that you are traveling on the National Highway. These roads are constructed and maintained by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). These highways connect one state to another. The name of the place and the distance are usually written on the milestone.

green milestone

If a green bar is visible on the milestone, it means that you are on a state highway. The responsibility of these roads lies with the respective state government. It usually works to connect one district to another. Through these, traffic is made easier at the local level.

black, white or blue milestone

When the milestones are black-white or blue, you are walking on the streets of an urban area or district. These roads are maintained by the Municipal Corporation or local administration. These are also called district roads and are meant to provide connectivity within a district. Presently the length of district roads in India is 6.32 lakh km, of which only 14.80% is developed as metalled roads.

orange milestone

Milestones with orange stripes mean that you are now entering a rural area. These milestones are especially visible on the roads built under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana. Their main objective is to connect villages with cities or towns.
