Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has made a big statement in the wake of the West Bengal assembly elections. He warned that if the BJP comes to power in West Bengal, strict action will be taken against those who attack party candidates.

He expressed confidence about the party’s victory, claiming that the BJP would win 100 seats in Assam and 200 in West Bengal. He also demanded to award ‘Bharat Ratna’ to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. He said that his contribution to implement SIR (Special Electoral Reforms) in the country will be remembered and that this initiative should be implemented in Assam as well.

Criticism on Mamata Banerjee’s claim

When West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed victory, Sarma hit back. “His statement shows a glimpse of defeat,” he quipped. He also mentioned that the tone of Mamata Banerjee’s speech had changed. He reiterated that the BJP would win more than 200 seats on May 4 and establish power in the state. Meanwhile, according to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu have recorded the highest voter turnout for the first time since independence. He congratulated the voters of both the states for this historic participation.

Record voting in Bengal

Out of 294 seats in West Bengal, 152 went to polls in the first phase, while all 234 seats in Tamil Nadu went to polls. 92.66 percent voting in West Bengal and 85.14 percent in Tamil Nadu was recorded till 10 pm, breaking all previous records.

 

Greater participation of women

The most notable feature of this election is the increased participation of women. In both the states, women voters outnumbered men. In West Bengal, the percentage of women voters was 92.69%, while that of men was 90.92%. Similarly, in Tamil Nadu, female participation was 85.76%, higher than male participation at 83.57%. The Election Commission also highlighted the significant participation of third-party voters. Tamil Nadu recorded 60.49% voter turnout, while West Bengal recorded 56.79% voter turnout.
