Congress has made serious allegations against Chief Minister’s wife Rinke Bhuyan Sarma regarding foreign assets. Congress claims that the Chief Minister’s wife has benami property worth crores in Dubai and a company registered in America, which has not been disclosed in the election affidavits. After these allegations, there has been an uproar in politics from Assam to Delhi. Congress’s big claim: ‘Dubai Connection’ should be investigated. Senior Congress leaders, while presenting some documents during a press conference, alleged that the family of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has invested in foreign countries. Congress says that they have luxurious apartments in prime location of Dubai and solid evidence of business operations in America. The party has demanded that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) should immediately take cognizance of the matter and investigate the foreign declared and undeclared properties of the Chief Minister’s family. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s counterattack: ‘Prove the allegations or apologize’ Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has rejected these allegations outright and termed it as ‘desperation’ of the Congress. The Chief Minister challenged and said that if Congress proves ownership of these properties, he will retire from politics. He taunted and said that Congress has no concrete issue left, hence they are now targeting his family. The Chief Minister also clarified that his wife is an independent businessman and all her dealings are within the ambit of law and transparent. There are rumors of defamation cases and legal battles in the political circles that the Chief Minister’s family may soon approach the court against these ‘false and baseless’ allegations. Even before this, Rinki Bhuyan Sarma has filed defamation cases against opposition leaders on allegations like PPE kit scam. Political analysts believe that Congress is trying to create an anti-corruption image by capitalizing on this issue before the upcoming assembly elections, while BJP is calling it an international conspiracy to tarnish the image of the Chief Minister.
