Racing Toward the Finish Line
The 23-km Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar Metro corridor in Pune is now in the final phase of construction, though officials caution that the project is unlikely to meet its earlier March-end completion target. The corridor is considered one of the city’s most crucial infrastructure projects, expected to ease traffic congestion along the busy Pune–Hinjewadi IT route.
Senior officials confirmed that trial runs are already underway across the entire alignment to test systems, track performance, and operational safety. “Commercial services can begin only after the concessionaire submits a formal readiness report and authorities grant final clearance,” they added. While initial projections aimed for an April launch, full passenger operations are now expected by June or July, contingent on final approvals and readiness.
The corridor is being executed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) in partnership with Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. This makes it the first fully elevated Metro corridor in the country developed under such a structure. Out of 23 planned stations, 13 are already complete, with the remainder nearing completion. Officials are evaluating whether to open the line entirely, even if a few stations remain temporarily closed, citing challenges in running partial services under the PPP framework.
A Lifeline for the IT Corridor
Once operational, the Metro line will connect Shivajinagar, a major transport hub in Pune, with Hinjewadi’s technology district, including the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park. Commuters on this congested route, particularly IT professionals, are expected to benefit from significantly reduced travel times.
Residents and commuters along the corridor have expressed frustration over repeated delays, particularly given the ongoing traffic snarls and road diversions. However, many acknowledge that prioritizing safety and proper testing over rushing the launch is essential for long-term reliability. Officials say the Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar corridor will also serve as a cornerstone for expanding Pune’s Metro network, strengthening connectivity between the city centre and key employment hubs, and marking a significant milestone in the city’s public transport infrastructure.
