Historic FTA signed between India and New Zealand

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today had a telephone conversation with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. The two leaders jointly announced the successful conclusion of the historic, ambitious and mutually beneficial India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

Following the talks that began during Prime Minister Luxon’s visit to India in March 2025, the two leaders agreed that the completion of the FTA in a record time of 9 months reflects mutual ambition and political will to further deepen relations between the two countries. This FTA will significantly deepen bilateral economic engagement, enhance market access, accelerate investment flows, strengthen strategic cooperation between the two countries and also open up new opportunities in various sectors for innovators, entrepreneurs, farmers, MSMEs, students and youth of both the countries.

With the strong and credible foundation provided by the FTA, the two leaders expressed confidence in doubling bilateral trade over the next five years and investment of US$20 billion from New Zealand to India over the next 15 years. The leaders also welcomed progress in other areas of bilateral cooperation such as sports, education and people-to-people ties and reiterated their commitment to further strengthen the India-New Zealand partnership.
