Historic rise of BJP in Bihar: Samrat Chaudhary becomes the first BJP Chief Minister, beginning of new politics

Patna. After the resignation of Nitish Kumar, a new chapter has started in the politics of Bihar. For the first time in the state, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Samrat Choudhary has created history by taking oath as the Chief Minister. This is considered a big political achievement for BJP.

Samrat Chaudhary’s name was finally approved after Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan clarified the situation. After this, Governor Syed Ataul Hasnain administered him the oath of office and secrecy as the 24th Chief Minister of Bihar.

Samrat Chaudhary, whose original name is Rakesh Kumar, was born on 16 November 1968 in Lakhanpur village of Tarapur block of Munger district. He belongs to a strong political family. His father Shakuni Chaudhary has been a seven-time MLA and MP, while his mother Parvati Devi has also been a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly.

Samrat Chaudhary, who hails from a backward class (Kurmi community), is considered an influential leader with a strong hold on the OBC vote bank in the state. His political journey has been full of ups and downs. He started his political career from Rashtriya Janata Dal in 1990 and became the Agriculture Minister in Rabri Devi’s government in 1999, where he was among the youngest ministers of Bihar.

After this he was elected MLA from Parbatta Assembly seat in 2000 and 2010. After being in JDU for some time, he joined BJP in 2017. Due to his rapidly increasing popularity in the party, he was made the state president of Bihar BJP in 2023.

In January 2024, he became the Deputy Chief Minister in the Nitish government and took charge of important departments like Finance, Health, Urban Development and Panchayati Raj. In the 2025 assembly elections, he won from Tarapur seat.

However, his political career has also been associated with some controversies. According to the 2025 election affidavit, he has two criminal cases pending against him—one registered in Patna and the other in Munger. Apart from this, a case of violation of code of conduct also came to light during the Lok Sabha elections. In his affidavit, he had given information about movable and immovable assets worth more than Rs 10 crore.

Samrat Chaudhary becoming the Chief Minister is not only a big achievement for the BJP, but it also indicates new equations and changes in the politics of Bihar.
