Historic Win in Mumbai Civic Polls, BJP-Shiv Sena Alliance Sweeps – Read

In a landmark political shift, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Mahayuti alliance has achieved a decisive victory in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, ending over 30 years of dominance by the Thackeray-led Shiv Sena faction in Asia’s richest civic body.

Mahayuti Triumphs in Mumbai

The BJP and its key ally, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction, crossed the majority mark in the 227-ward election, securing a comfortable lead over rival parties. Early trends and results show the alliance comfortably above the 114-seat threshold needed to control the BMC, with strong performances across the city.

Under the leadership of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the BJP not only surpassed its previous tally from the 2017 BMC polls but also emerged as the dominant force in the civic body.

End of an Era for Thackeray Faction

Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) has seen a sharp decline in support compared to its historical strength in Mumbai. Despite the combined effort with Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), the reunited Thackeray front failed to stop the BJP-Shinde Sena surge.

Political analysts note that the BJP’s strategic campaigning and appeal on governance and development issues resonated with a wide spectrum of voters, including younger and urban electorates.

Next Mayor to Be from Mahayuti

With the BJP-Shinde alliance now set to take control of the BMC, Mumbai is poised to elect a BJP-Shiv Sena mayor — a significant shift from decades of Shiv Sena leadership in the city’s civic governance.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, while praising the BJP’s leadership in the polls, indicated that the new mayor would come from the broader Mahayuti alliance.

Political observers suggest this result could have significant ramifications ahead of future state and national elections, reshaping party strategies and alliances.
