Now the first case has come to light in Assam. 'Human metapneumovirus' (HMPV) infection has been detected in a 10-month-old baby in Assam, the first such case in Assam this season. Officials gave this information on Saturday.
Officials said that the child is undergoing treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh and his condition is now stable. AMCH Superintendent Dr. Dharubjyoti Bhuiyan said that the child was admitted to the government hospital four days ago due to cold related symptoms.
“HMPV infection was confirmed yesterday after receiving the test results from ICMR-RMRC, Lahaul,” the hospital superintendent said.
Bhuiyan said samples are regularly sent to the Indian Council of Medical Research for testing for influenza and flu-related cases.
“It was a routine checkup during which HMPV infection was detected. The child's condition is stable now. It is a common virus and there is no need to worry about it,” he said.
Dr Vishwajit Borkakoti, senior scientist at ICMR's Regional Medical Research Centre, Lahowal (Dibrugarh), said, “Since 2014, we have found 110 cases of HMPV in Dibrugarh district. This is the first case of this season. This happens every year and there is nothing new in it. We received the sample from AMCH and it was confirmed to be HMPV.

Meanwhile, on Friday, the Central Government has instructed the State Governments to be cautious.
