Holi 2026: When is Holika Dahan? Know the auspicious time

Holi 2026: There is some confusion among the people regarding the date of Holika Dahan this year, but according to astrological calculations and scriptures, it is considered most appropriate and auspicious to perform Holika Dahan on 3 March 2026. Although Purnima Tithi will start on the night of 2nd March, there will be shadow of Bhadra at that time. Performing any auspicious work during Bhadra period is considered inauspicious, hence burning will not be done at that time.

Apart from this, lunar eclipse is also taking place on March 3, due to which Sutak period will be effective from morning itself. In such a situation, to avoid both Bhadra and eclipse defects, the evening time of March 3 is considered best and fruitful.

It is considered necessary for Holika Dahan to coincide with Purnima Tithi and Pradosh Kaal (time after sunset). Purnima Tithi will start on March 2, but at that time Bhadra Mukha will remain. In the scriptures, lighting fire in Bhadra Mukha is considered inauspicious, because it is considered to be a possibility of hindrance in happiness and peace.

The full moon date will be till 05:07 pm on 3rd March. The rule says that even if the full moon ends before the Pradosh period, then it is considered best to perform the burning during the Pradosh period of the same day. On this basis, Holika Dahan will be celebrated across the country on March 3.

Caution in Sutak period and worship

Due to the lunar eclipse on March 3, Sutak period will start from 09:39 am. Worship is not done in temples during Sutak. Preparations for Holika can be made at this time, but the proper puja should be done only after the eclipse is over. The eclipse will end at 06:46 pm, after which it will be auspicious to perform Holika puja by taking bath and purification.
