Holi, Bhang, and the High Court CJI Suryakant’s Viral Remark on Post-Festival Recovery:

If you think the Supreme Court is always about stern faces and intense legal debates, a recent hearing might change your mind. Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant recently proved that even the highest court in the land has room for a little humor especially when the festive spirit of Holi is just around the corner.

A Witty Exchange in Open Court

The moment happened during a hearing related to a case from the Allahabad High Court titled Suresh Devi vs High Court of Judicature at Allahabad. As the bench was discussing when to schedule the next hearing, the topic of the upcoming Holi break came up.

When suggesting a date shortly after the holidays, the CJI stepped in with a witty remark that caught everyone off guard. He suggested listing the matter a week after the break, jokingly saying, “It’s Allahabad, brother. It will take at least a week for the effect of the bhang to wear off!”

The Context Behind the Joke

For those who know the culture of Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad) and broader Uttar Pradesh, the comment was a playful nod to the local traditions. Holi in this region is famous for its high energy and the traditional consumption of bhang (a preparation of cannabis). The CJI was essentially joking that the city would be so deep in celebration that things wouldn’t get back to “normal” for at least seven days.

A Breath of Fresh Air

The courtroom, usually a place of high tension, immediately broke into smiles and light laughter. It wasn’t meant to be a criticism of the court or the city, but rather a “human moment” from the Chief Justice, acknowledging the cultural heartbeat of North India.

While the case itself remains pending and will be heard post-Holi, this brief exchange has gone viral on social media. It’s a reminder that judges, despite their massive responsibilities, are very much in tune with the traditions and quirks of the people they serve.

So, if you’re from Allahabad and planning your Holi festivities, even the CJI knows you might need a few extra days to recover!
