Hormuz dispute increases tension amid US-Iran peace talks, JD Vance reaches Switzerland
New Delhi: Amidst the ongoing tension in West Asia for several months, the eyes of the world are now focused on Switzerland, where important peace talks between America and Iran are about to begin. Representatives of both the countries have reached Switzerland and are preparing for talks to restore stability in the region. However, even before the talks could begin, a new dispute regarding the Strait of Hormuz has emerged, which has made the situation more sensitive.
US Vice President JD Vance has reached Switzerland, while Iran’s high level delegation had reached there a day earlier. The main discussion between the two sides is going to be on regional security, ceasefire and other important issues.
Controversy increases over Strait of Hormuz
The talks are taking place at a time when differences have emerged between the two countries regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed that it has closed this strategic waterway. Whereas America has rejected this claim and said that the movement of merchant ships through this route continues normally. This strait is considered extremely important for global oil and gas supply. In such a situation, the uncertainty created regarding this may have an impact on international markets and regional security.
Efforts to take forward the ceasefire agreement
Recently, America and Iran had agreed to a 60-day ceasefire, so that a positive environment for talks could be created. This agreement is believed to be part of an interim agreement between US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezheshkian. However, the dispute arising over the Strait of Hormuz may make this process difficult. Now the biggest challenge for both the countries is to make further talks successful while maintaining the ceasefire.
Who are included in the delegations of both countries
The Iranian delegation is being led by chief negotiator Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf. Foreign Minister Abbas Arakchi, senior security officials, representatives of the Central Bank and officials related to the oil sector are also present with him. The US delegation includes Vice President JD Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Presidential Advisor Jared Kushner. Both sides can discuss for several days.
Separate statements from Iran and America
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Bagai said that Tehran will insist on implementing the agreements already reached in this meeting. He also said that the record of the other party fulfilling its obligations has not been satisfactory. On the other hand, JD Vance expressed confidence that the ceasefire will continue. He said that he has not found any clear evidence to prove that the Strait of Hormuz has been completely closed. Vance also expressed hope that during the talks, progress could be made on issues related to the nuclear program and Lebanon.
Ceasefire in Lebanon still fragile
An important condition for starting talks between America and Iran was to stop violence in Lebanon. However, despite the implementation of the ceasefire, the situation has not become completely normal. According to Lebanon’s Civil Defense Department, several people were killed in Israeli attacks shortly after the ceasefire took effect. Israel says that it is taking action in response to the activities of Hezbollah. Hezbollah has also made it clear that it will not allow Israel to have completely independent military activities in Lebanon. Due to this there is tension in the area.
Israel indicated to maintain military presence
Although Israel is not a direct part of the US-Iran agreement, it has indicated that it will not withdraw from the Lebanese areas under its control for now. According to reports, the Israeli leadership has instructed the army to stop firing, but it has been decided to continue military presence in strategic areas. In a recent survey, a large number of Israeli citizens believed that joint military operations did not achieve the expected goals. Many people also questioned the government’s claims and said that the declared objectives related to the struggle could not be fully accomplished.
Switzerland welcomed the delegation
Meanwhile, the Foreign Ministry of Switzerland has welcomed the arrival of the Iranian delegation. The ministry said that Switzerland is providing a platform for talks regarding the implementation of the agreement between the two countries and the further process.
