Horticulture production to decline marginally in 2023-24, fruit production to rise

The country's horticulture production is estimated to decline marginally by 0.65 per cent year-on-year to 353.2 million tonnes in 2023-24. This was said in the government's third advance estimate released on Saturday. Fruit production is expected to increase by 2.29 per cent to 112.7 million tonnes in 2023-24 (July-June) due to higher production of mango, banana, lemon, grapes and custard apple.

The agriculture ministry, however, said production of apples, citrus fruits, guava, litchi, pomegranate and pineapple is expected to fall. It said vegetable production is estimated at 205.8 million tonnes, with an increase in tomato, cabbage, cauliflower and many other vegetables compensating for the decline in staples like potato and onion.

Onion production is expected to be 242.4 lakh tonnes. Potato production is expected to be 5.70 crore tonnes. This figure shows a decline on year-on-year basis due to low production in Bihar and West Bengal. Tomato production is estimated to increase by 4.38 percent to 213.2 lakh tonnes. Similarly, honey, flowers, plantation crops, spices and aromatic and medicinal plants indicate an increase this year.
